When beginning a diet we are highly motivated and hope for the best results within days. Usually, we do lose a lot of weight in the beginning of a diet. But after a couple of days when the scale doesn’t move down as quickly as we had hoped for or when we cheated and ate something bad we tend to be frustrated and throw our goals overboard.
Motivation is the key to successful weight loss. Here’s 4 simple methods to stay focused and motivated:
1. Don’t expect too much of your body
The human body is not a machine. It has it’s own pace and rules. Help your body by setting small weekly goals. This helped me to stay focused and motivated during my weight loss. Did I want to lose a lot of weight immediately? Of course I wanted to. But I realized that my body didn’t.
If you set your goals too high you set yourself up to for being disappointed and losing the motivation.
Remember: The quicker you lose weight the more at risk you are to gain it all back (plus a lot quicker). Tell yourself: This week I want to lose 2-4 pounds. If you manage that week successfully, what a motivational boost! Be proud and happy with your success. And move on to the next week.
2. Write down a weekly list
After learning what foods are healthy and good for myself I wrote down what I had eaten throughout the day and at what time, my morning weight and how much time I spent with an active workout. Quickly I understood what made me lose weight quickly and what didn’t. Every body’s body is different. Write down your own list and be curious about the results. This can be fun!
This list will help you also to react to your body’s needs and weight loss goals. After one week, make a resume of what had happened. You will notice that the scale sometimes reacts differently on days you did exactly the same program. Don’t be disappointed. If you keep to eating healthy and do your exercise, you will lose weight. And don’t worry, you will have a lot of surprising days, as well.
3. Remember the most important goal
The most important goal is to lose weight in a healthy way. It is not important how much you lose at a certain time. It is important that you lose weight without gaining it back after your diet program is over. So don’t throw your plans completely overboard if you don’t lose weight quickly enough. Keep in mind: Even the smallest success is a success.
4. Expect setbacks and get back on track
There will be days you will have cravings and you will eat something that is not healthy. Don’t make this stop you! Get right back on track. Be aware that these craving do and will happen. We’re only human. Allow yourself a treat. I always did when I had a successful week. You can make them part of your plan. Reward yourself once in a while and you will be able to succeed with your goals much easier.
